The Missouri by Stanley Vestal
Mr. Vestal in telling the story of one of the greatest rivers on the continent does not neglect the people whose lives the stream has influenced. The Missouri was the main highway to the West. It was the base of operations for the long battle which at last won the West, its banks holding an unbroken line of forts, missions, trading posts and Indian agencies from mouth to source. He points out that even today the Missouri is still the boundary between two cultures -- on the easy bank, tall corn and barn yards; on the west, the saddle, the ranch, the beef steer.
