Eyewitness History of the Civil War by Joe H. Kirchberger
A comprehensive overview of the years between 1820 and 1877. The preface contains excellent commentary on these turbulent years and their impact on the molding of the United States into one nation indivisible. What follows are quotations from memoirs, letters, diaries, newspapers, and official documents. Those quoted come from all walks of life--political leader or grieving mother, military commander or fugitive slave. Thirty-three documents are excerpted. Four appendices contain valuable primary-source and reference materials. One has biographical sketches of 200 major personalities of the period; another includes clear and concise maps of the major theaters of war. Interspersed throughout are political cartoons, photographs, and paintings. All of these features, plus the inclusive bibliography and detailed index, make this an excellent reference tool. It is highly interesting and is an excellent starting point for more in-depth study.
