Ed Howe - Country Town Philosopher by Calder M. Pickett
Ed Howe and his writings have long needed dissection. Here at last is a comprehensive picture of the man who was once the most widely-quoted small town editor in America. As a magazine writer, novelist, and publisher of the Atchison (Kansas) Globe until his death in 1937, Howe was regarded by many as the sage of common sense and a pillar of his era's conservatism. Although William Allen White eulogized him as "a plain man who lived a plain life among plain people," Howe associated with such among the high and mighty as William Dean Howells, Mark Twain, Elbert Hubbard, and H L Mencken. He traveled widely, and he commented on just about every aspect of the small town, the nation, and the world around him.
