Pioneer History Stories of the Mississippi Valley by Charles A. McMurry, Ph.D.
The early history stories of the Mississippi Valley are proving more and more acceptable to teachers and children in intermediate grades. The present volume of Pioneer Stories was first published in 1891, and after many editions has been revised a second time, and now takes its place as the second of a series of three volumes of American History Stories. Volume I, “Pioneers on Land and Sea,” deals with stories of the Atlantic coast and of ocean explorers. The third volume deals with early explorers of the Rocky Mountain states. In the “Special Method in History,” a full discussion is given of the value of these stories and of the method of treating them, illustrated in detail by the story of George Rogers Clark. The material from Roosevelt’s “The Winning of the West” and from Parkman’s “La Salle, or the Discovery of the Great West” is used through the courtesy of the authors. The view of Governor Sevier’s Later home on the Nolichucky River was taken from a photograph in the Fay collection of De Kalb, Illinoi.
