Journal of a Voyage to New York by Jaspar Dankers and Peter Sluyter
Journal of a Voyage to New York and a tour in several of the American colonies in 1679-80 is valuable to anyone interested in the social, economic, institutional, or geographical conditions in the early period of the settlements along the Atlantic seaboard. In addition, the diary serves not only to shed light on the characters and personalities of some of the leading colonial figures of the day, but also to the holier-than-thou attitude of the author, Jasper Dankers, a representative of the Labadist sect. He came, along with his companion, Peter Sluyter, as a secret agent for the Labadists in order to find a place for the group to settle in the New World, since they were no longer welcome in Europe. Viewed with suspicion in both New York and Massachusetts, Dankers selection of a site in Maryland on the property of Augustine Hermans was partially due to the spirit of religious toleration there, and it resulted in the establishment of the first communal experiment in America in 1683.
