Great Works of Naive Art by Doreen Ehrlich
Naive Art has an immediate appeal. It communicates clearly and simply with straight forward imagery that knows no national boundaries whether the work is from Victorian Britain, 19th century America, as in the Peaceable Kingdom paintings of Edward Hicks, or 20th century Croatia or Haiti. Unlike academically trained painters, these artists usually painted while working at something else. Henri Rousseau, for example, worked as a customs officer until he retired to paint full time and Grandma Moses and Helen Bradley devoted their lives to their families before starting to paint in their old age.
