Gentlemen, Scholars and Scoundrels edited by Horace Knowles
A remarkably eclectic medley of Harper's Magazine articles, from the first issue in 1850 through 1959. Lots of names you'll recognize, and some you should get to know if they aren't familiar—like James Thurber, Horace Greeley, Clifton Fadiman. Two pieces written in 1956 are an unsettling reminder that emotions ran deep and wisdom was in short supply when the nation was struggling to take the next steps after the 1954 Supreme Court ruling that said segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. A lot of folks in the South didn't believe that. They told themselves an endless bunch of lies. This is an offering of literature, opinion, and commentary from 109 dynamic and sometimes ghastly years in our history.
This hardcover book is in good condition with some aging.
